The yellowfin tuna has a diverse diet that includes fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods. Research teams analyzing their fatty acid composition discovered that the larger a yellowfin tuna's "spear" is, the greater the tendency for them to switch to other fish as primary prey. This change is believed to be a way of avoiding competition with their young over food, or explained as their way of "caring" for the juveniles.
