The Common Yellow Swallowtail is sometimes called the "fennel swallowtail" because its caterpillars use fennel as their host plant.; In truth, they're happy to munch on most umbellifers like carrots, so you can call them "carrot swallowtail" just as easily. These names only relate to its larval stage however, since the adult Common Yellow Swallowtail mostly feeds on flower nectar and shows no special preference for umbellifers.
